This summer was no different than others, as I served as an orientation assistant for Labo International Exchange Program. Labo is a youth organization in Japan that is based around learning language and culture. Since 1980, Ohio 4-H has participated in this exchange and and hosted over 3,800 students. Every year, more than 100 youth participate and travel to America.
My role is to assist the students with their transition from Japan to America before they head to their host families for their one month home stay. During this fast paced weekend, we work to ensure language proficiency, acclimate to culture, learn basic life skills, and adjust to the time change.
My favorite part of my time with the students is learning about Japanese culture and sharing my own. These students are so dedicated to learning from one another and creating bonds.
As one can imagine, it is extremely difficult to learn another language. Then, not only to learn it, but also be immersed in it is another story. The students are extremely impressive. They work tirelessly to be the best they can be. I work to make it as fun as possible and learn Japanese while they learn English. This creates a bond and fills the room with laughter as I stumble over the words.
This program has created lifelong friendships for me. I absolutely love coming back each year and assisting with this process. It is always difficult to see students go home, but I am always hopeful that one day they will return as college mentors.
